The tally of fatalities resulting from the transport jet that ignited and crashed has climbed to 13, per official announcements.
Mayor's Statement
While en route to the Teamsters’ candlelight gathering, I was informed of a thirteenth victim that died as a result of the aircraft accident,” stated the municipal leader in a public communication. “My prayers are with the relatives, friends and peers of all who were killed in this week’s disaster. We will get through this together.”
Deceased Identified
A statement from the carrier named the pilots operating the aircraft as Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.
“Our thoughts reach out to every UPSer who has been impacted and everyone in our local area – helping you and ensuring you obtain the attention and resources you need is our priority,” the organization’s communication stated.
Inquiry Details
Government officials revealed that the freight aircraft’s left wing burst into flames and an power plant fell off shortly after takeoff from the airfield, causing the plane to fall and burst into a fireball.
The National Transportation Safety Board has said it is probing the aircraft’s maintenance history, which was in the state for maintenance several weeks ahead of the crash.
Aviation records showed the plane was on the runway in San Antonio, Texas from the start of last month to 18 October.
“We are cognizant that this plane was there in that city,” remarked an NTSB member on Thursday, not giving a specific time frame. “We will review all elements of service that was completed, including the San Antonio time, straight to the time of the journey.”
Retrieval of Key Components
The audio device and information unit were retrieved, and the engine was found on the runway.
The recorders – known as black boxes – were constructed to survive crash impacts and extreme temperatures from fires, and they appeared to be undamaged when found among the remains. Authorities plan on analyzing data from the devices.
Aircraft’s concluding flight details displayed an elevation of 475 feet and a rate of 210 mph prior to the crash.
Maintenance Background
According to Federal Aviation Administration records from that date, a fracture on a part within the tank area required maintenance.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which stated it supplies airframe maintenance for the carrier’s aircraft and runs a repair facility in San Antonio, chose not to comment, but expressed it would cooperate fully when relevant authorities reached out it.
Operations Resume
In the meantime, UPS Worldport services resumed last night with its overnight or night sort operation, spokesperson the company official said. Each of the three runways at the aviation hub were likewise back in operation.
The UPS package handling facility in Louisville is the company’s largest. The facility engages over a large number of individuals in the area, handles 300 trips each day and processes in excess of a huge volume of items an hour.
Community Reaction
A candlelight vigil was organized on the night of that date by the regional worker’s group, which represents workers at the airfield, the organization’s primary freight center.
Worker representatives, which supports UPS workers, began the vigil with a quiet tribute at the evening hour, the rough time of the accident previously.
“This event was so sudden, so surprising,” the mayor spoke to the assembly of 200. “No one had a chance to bid farewell to any one of those who we have mourned.”
