British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
