Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary addresses the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics along with the dreaded aspects of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a masterful portrayal playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress forced into hosting a fitness program on the small screen. Pushed out due to her deceitful superior Harvey, she seeks out an enigmatic and horrifying process called the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to a progressively parasitic dynamic among both women. This Friday, Paramount+

This Supernatural Story
Steven Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities through this nifty paranormal narrative captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their recent residence, the camera – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. The daughter appears sensing the supernatural presence, and it seems defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Cage fully commits to his cult stardom through this self-referential adventure. He acts as a narcissistic film star called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a birthday party on the Spanish island for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unique performing skills is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well even without a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the local kids frightened. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a dungeon, he fears the worst. Yet the old telephone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, late evening, on Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the struggle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for materialism in this director's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals begin profiting from the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Chastain achieves to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, on Film4
Black Bag
The current week's additional entry by the same director presents a espionage tale as sharp as the polo necks used by Fassbender's intelligence officer.
